Belize: Actun Tunichmil Muknal - A Couple's Adventure of a Lifetime!

June 30, 2018 - Thank God, we SURVIVED this activity at a Mayan burial cave site in Belize, near San Ignacio, Cayo District called Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM). Jake and I had been to many travel adventures. But, this one was way far the most challenging adventure we ever had together! It was an Indiana Jones like adventure with 45 minutes hike that included crossing 3 rivers by foot. A short swim to the entrance of the cave where Jake almost drowned - and was rescued by our tour guide. His swim shoes came off and he was trying to get it but, was sinking down and so was him next!!! This was followed by two hours of climbing up and down this wet cave that has some current, crawling into narrow openings in single file, climbing rocks - which some were sharp and slippery. We saw some bats inside the cave behind the stalactites, amazing stone formations, sacrifice altars in the dry chambers, Mayan artifacts, skeletons and skulls of sacrificed humans - which one was called the crystal maiden - a skull and skeleton of an 18 year old woman, which was just recently confirmed to be that of a male. Recently, the Belizian government prohibited bringing in cameras, and we were very unfortunate not able to take any photos and videos, but very blessed to share this unforgettable memory with our travel buddies, Catherine and Dario. The pictures shared here were captured from other sources who were able to still take photos before it was prohibited. We exited the cave the same way we got in. WARNING! This activity is not for everyone.
